Eid Prayer: Timing and Recommended Sunnahs

Eid Prayer: Timing and Recommended Sunnahs

Eid prayer (Salat al-Eid) is one of the most joyful acts of worship, performed twice a year — on Eid al-Fitr (marking the end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (during the days of Hajj). Unlike the five daily prayers, it carries its own unique timings, and additional takbirat that every Muslim should know.

When Is Eid Prayer Performed?

Eid prayer is performed after sunrise and before noon. Its time begins when the sun has risen approximately the height of a spear above the horizon, and extends until midday, just before Dhuhr — corresponding to the time of Ḍuḥā prayer. (Source)

Note: It is a Sunnah to delay Eid al-Fitr prayer slightly to allow people time to pay Zakat al-Fitr, and to hasten Eid al-Adha prayer so people can slaughter their sacrificial animals early in the day.

Conditions and Recommendations Before the Prayer

For Eid al-Fitr:

  • Pay Zakat al-Fitr before the prayer.
  • Perform ghusl (a full ritual bath) — this is a recommended Sunnah.
  • Wear your best and cleanest clothes, and apply perfume (for men).
  • Eat an odd number of dates or something sweet before heading out — Anas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ did not go out in the morning on the day of the breaking of the fast till he ate some dates, and he would eat an odd number. (Sahih)
  • Walk to the prayer if possible, taking one route and returning by another — Jābir narrated that on a festival day the Prophet ﷺ would return by a different road from the one he had taken when going out. (Sahih)
  • Recite the Takbīr while walking to the prayer — aloud for men and quietly for women.

Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, Lā ilāha illallāh, Allāhu Akbar, Allāhu Akbar, wa lillāhil ḥamd.

For Eid al-Adha:

  • Do not eat before the prayer — the Sunnah is to eat from your sacrifice after it. Buraidah narrated that the Prophet did not go out on the day of the breaking of the fast till he had some food, but that he did not take any food on the day of sacrifice till he had prayed. (Sahih)
  • Perform ghusl, wear your best clothes, apply perfume (for men), and recite the Takbīr as mentioned above.

Note: Scholars agree that there is no single obligatory formula for the Takbīr — the matter is broad and flexible. This is the position of Mālik, a narration from Aḥmad, and the view of Ibn Taymiyyah, al-Ṣanʿānī, al-Shawkānī, Ibn Bāz, and Ibn ʿUthaymīn. Their evidence is that Allah says: “…and mention the name of Allah on known days” (Al-Ḥajj: 28), and: “…and remember Allah during the appointed days” (Al-Baqarah: 203). Both verses command the remembrance of Allah without restricting it to any particular wording — so however one makes Takbīr, the command is fulfilled. (Source)

Where Is Eid Prayer Performed?

The Sunnah is to perform Eid prayer in an open prayer ground (musalla), as the Prophet ﷺ used to do. It is permissible to pray in a mosque if there is a genuine need, but the open musalla is preferred, the Prophet ﷺ would leave his mosque and go out to the open prayer ground (muṣallā) to pray Eid, and the caliphs after him did the same. He would never choose the lesser act over the better one, nor would he guide his community away from what is more virtuous. We are commanded to follow his example — and it makes no sense that we would be directed toward the inferior option while the better one is left aside. There is no report that he ever prayed Eid in his mosque except when there was a genuine need. Muslims throughout history and across all lands have consistently gone out to the muṣallā for Eid prayer, whether their mosques were large or small. The Prophet ﷺ did this even though his own mosque was one of the most honored places on earth.

The Prophet ﷺ used to go out on the day of sacrifice and the day of the breaking of the fast, first of all pray, and when he had prayed stand up facing the people while they were seated in their place of prayer. If he had cause to send out an expedition he mentioned it to the people, or if he required anything else he gave them commands about it, and he would say, “Give alms, give alms, give alms.” Those who gave most were the women. Then he would go away………….(Sahih)

Whatever errors or lapses occurred in this work are from me and from Satan, and Allah and His Messenger are free from them. I remind you yet I myself forget, and we ask Allah for guidance, pardon, and well-being.
