How to Memorize the Quran

How to Memorize the Quran | Quran memorization tips

Many Muslims are eager to memorize the Qur’an and teach their children parts of it, but they face difficulties in retaining the memorization and verses, often forgetting them.
It is common for a person to forget part of what they have memorized – as Allah, the Almighty, said to the Imam of the memorizers and their leader, peace be upon him:

 سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنسَىٰ

“We will make you recite, [O Muhammad], and you will not forget”

(Surah Al-A’la 87:6)

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) Narrated: Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) heard a man reciting the Qur’an at night, and said, “May Allah bestow His Mercy on him, as he has reminded me of such-and-such Verses of such-and-such Suras, which I was caused to forget. [Sahih al-Bukhari]

Forgetfulness of the Qur’an comes in two types:

  • The first: Forgetfulness resulting from being preoccupied with worldly matters – especially if those matters are prohibited – leading to neglecting the review and recitation of the Qur’an. This type is condemned. Allah says:

وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبِّ إِنَّ قَوْمِي اتَّخَذُوا هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًا

“And the Messenger has said, “O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’ān as [a thing] abandoned.”

(Surah Al-Furqan, verse 30)

The worldly matters here refer not to spending time earning a living but to excessive attachment to worldly pursuits and desires, which results in neglecting the Qur’an.

  • The second: Forgetfulness not resulting from neglect, but due to weak memory, aging, or being preoccupied with matters beyond one’s control. It may also be due to learning obligatory or recommended knowledge, or being engaged in teaching Islamic sciences. None of this, Insha’Allah, falls under the blameworthy neglect of memorization.

How to Memorize the Quran

Dear Believers, Memorizing the Quran should be undertaken with a sincere intention, solely for the sake of Allah, to seek His pleasure and Paradise, not for showing off or gaining a reputation. To effectively memorize the Quran, all of us need to set clear, achievable goals, such as deciding on a specific portion to memorize each day and repeating it regularly with proper tajweed to avoid boredom and enhance retention. It is essential not to move on to the next section until the current portion is perfectly memorized. Since the Quran can easily be forgotten, continuous review is vital to prevent forgetfulness and ensure long-term retention. Additionally, correct pronunciation and reading are essential and can only be learned from a skilled teacher. The Quran was transmitted orally, and this method continues to be the best approach. The following 10 points will help you memorize the Quran effectively, إن شاء الله

1. Purify Your Intention

Make your memorization purely for the sake of Allah. Sincerity brings blessings, and if your goal is Allah’s pleasure and reward, He will grant you success.

2. Set a Realistic Schedule and Goals

A crucial first step is to establish a realistic schedule and achievable daily goals. Don’t try to memorize too much at once. A common approach is to set a target of memorizing a certain number of verses or pages each day. For example, you could aim to memorize half a page daily. This consistent, incremental progress is more sustainable and less overwhelming than sporadic, intensive sessions.

Create a Timetable: Allocate specific times of the day for memorization. Morning hours, particularly after Fajr prayer, are often considered the most blessed and productive time for this task.

Track Your Progress: Keep a log or a chart to track the surahs and ajza’ (parts) you have memorized. Seeing your progress visually can be very motivating.

3. Stay Away From Sins

Sins darken the heart and weaken memory. Protect yourself from disobedience, as it directly affects your ability to memorize and retain the Qur’an.

4. Recite in Voluntary Prayers

Make it a habit to recite your memorized portions in sunnah and night prayers. This was the practice of the righteous predecessors, and it deeply embeds the Qur’an in your heart.

5. Master the Basics of Tajweed and Learn Under a Qualified Teacher

Before you can memorize, you must learn to recite correctly. Tajweed is the set of rules for the proper pronunciation and recitation of the Quran. Reciting with Tajweed rules ensures that you are pronouncing the words and letters correctly, which is vital for the meaning.

Find a Teacher: The best way to learn the Quran online with Tajweed is under the guidance of a qualified teacher (shaykh or qari). They can correct your mistakes and help you perfect your recitation.

Listen to Recitations: Regularly listen to the recitations of famous and skilled reciters. This helps in familiarizing yourself with the correct pronunciation.

6. Use the same copy of the Quran and follow a methodical approach

Consistency is key, and using the same copy of the Quran can be a significant aid. Your brain associates the text with its specific location on the page.

Stick to One Quran: Use a single copy of the Quran with the same page layout throughout your memorization journey.

The Repetition Method: This is a powerful technique. A popular method is to first read the verses you want to memorize 5-10 times, then close the Quran and try to recite them. Repeat this process until you can do it without mistakes.

7. Understand the Meaning

Memorizing words without understanding their meaning can be difficult and less fulfilling. When you understand the context and message, it becomes easier to recall the verses.

Read the Translation: Before memorizing, read the translation of the verses you plan to learn. This helps in grasping the concepts.

Study Tafsir: A brief study of Tafsir can provide deeper context and insight, making the verses more memorable.

8. Revision is More Important than Memorization

Many people focus solely on memorizing and neglect what they’ve already learned. Revision is the most critical part of the memorization process. Without regular revision, the memorized verses can easily fade from memory.

Daily Revision: Dedicate a significant portion of your memorization time to revising memorized Surahs. A common recommendation is to spend 80% of your time on revision and 20% on new memorization.

Revision Cycles: Divide your memorized Surah into sections and create a revision schedule to go through each section regularly.

9. Maintain Daily Worship

Guard your prayers, increase in dhikr (remembrance of Allah), seek forgiveness, and frequently say: لاحول ولا قوة إلا بالله (There is no power nor strength except through Allah). Worship strengthens your heart and keeps your memorization alive.

10. Overcome the Tricks of Shayṭān

Shayṭān will try to distract you from this noble path. To resist his whispers:

      • Remain steadfast in acts of obedience and abundant remembrance of Allah. Ibn Taymiyyah said, “Whispers (waswās) afflict everyone who turns to Allah. A servant should remain firm, patient, and consistent in dhikr and prayer, without becoming weary, for by persisting in this, the plot of Shayṭān will depart.” Allah, the Exalted, says: “Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.” [al-Nisā’ 4:76].

      • And if he seeks to prevent you from doing good, seek refuge in Allah from his evil and say:  لا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله (There is no power nor strength except by Allah). By Allah’s permission, he will turn away from you.

      • Increase in seeking forgiveness and repentance to Allah whenever you sin. By doing so, you cut off every path Shayṭān tries to use against you.

May Allah grant us all success in our journey of memorizing His glorious Book.
