A Preserved Miracle: The Quran Across Fourteen Centuries

Introduction

Among the attributes Allah bestowed upon the Quran is an honour that no human composition can claim: it is declared by its our Creator to be the most beautiful speech ever revealed.

” Allah has revealed (from time to time) the most beautiful Message in the form of a Book, consistent with itself, (yet) repeating (its teaching in various aspects): the skins of those who fear their Lord tremble thereat; then their skins and their hearts do soften to the celebration of Allah’s praises. Such is the guidance of Allah: He guides therewith whom He pleases, but such as Allah leaves to stray, can have none to guide.” Surah Az-Zumar, (39:23)

This description — a Book that causes the skin to tremble before the heart softens — captures an experience reported by millions of listeners across history, many of whom had no knowledge of Arabic yet were moved to tears. The Quran’s power to stir the soul is itself evidence of its divine origin.

The Promise of Divine Preservation

Because the Quran is the Prophet’s enduring and final miracle, its preservation was never left to human effort. Allah made an explicit and unconditional promise:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Surah Al-Hijr, 15:9)

This promise has held for over fourteen centuries. Not a single letter has been added or removed since the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad — peace be upon him — down to the present day. In every generation, the Quran was memorised in the hearts of hundreds of thousands and inscribed with meticulous care, a living chain of transmission the scholars termed tawātur — successive narration so widespread that forgery or alteration becomes impossible.

A Living Book: Oral Transmission and the Science of Authentication

What distinguishes the Qur’an from every other ancient scripture is that it was never a text waiting to be discovered. Rather, it was recited by the Prophet, peace be upon him, and transmitted orally from Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to his Companions, and from every generation of teachers to their students, in an unbroken chain that continues to this day.

This is why the preservation of the Qur’an was never dependent on parchment or paper.

Beyond memorisation, the Qur’an as a transmitted text carries the highest standard of authentication known to scholarship. Every link in its chain of narration consists of individuals whose names, biographies, and moral character have been carefully documented and verified (see also).  Islamic scholars developed an entire discipline for this purpose—Ilm al-Rijal—a science dedicated to assessing the reliability of those who transmitted religious knowledge . A transmitter’s honesty, memory, and conduct were rigorously scrutinised and attested to by other trustworthy scholars before their narration was accepted. This is further reinforced by Tawatur—the principle that the Qur’an was not carried by a single chain alone, but by countless independent chains of equally authenticated narrators, all conveying the exact same text, word for word and letter for letter, across every generation. When transmission reaches this level, the possibility of alteration, forgery, or error becomes not merely unlikely, but logically impossible.

The chains of well-known reciters that exist today have been recorded all the way back to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ—see the PDF file below.

The Birmingham Quran Manuscript: A Witness from the Past

Among the most striking physical witnesses to the Qur’an’s preservation is the Birmingham Qur’an Manuscript, preserved today at the University of Birmingham in England.

Radiocarbon Dating of the Manuscript

The parchment (shown above) has been radiocarbon dated to between 568 and 645 CE. Since Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed away in 632 CE, this places the manuscript within his lifetime—or at most, within thirteen years after his death.

This parchment is a witness from the past—no more than a witness, for the identity of its scribe remains unknown. It may have been written by a student recording his memorisation, or by another individual. (see the scholarly testimony below).

What gives it significance, however, is the text itself. The words and letters preserved on that ancient parchment align precisely with the Qur’an that has been transmitted from the lips of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. They are identical to what is recited today by billions of Muslims in every corner of the world.

A Scholar’s Testimony

Sheikh Muhammad bin Shams al-Din — General Supervisor of the Islamic Encyclopaedia website and founder of the Taalib al-Ilm platform — examined the Birmingham manuscript directly and compared it to the Quran in circulation today. His conclusion was unequivocal:

“I have examined the image of the version published by the University of Birmingham, then compared it to the ‘original’ version, and found it—by the grace of Allah—to be completely identical (see the Comparison below). When I say the ‘original’ version, I mean the one in our hands today. This is because the Mushaf we have was transmitted to us through Mutawatir (successive narration), meaning the Ummah passed it down generation after generation, preserving it both in their hearts and in writing. Throughout history, anyone who memorized the Quran by heart or wrote it down would recite it to their teacher to ensure the integrity of their memorization or transcription, word for word and letter for letter. Thus, falsehood cannot approach it from before it or from behind it. Allah Almighty said: “Indeed, it is We who sent down the message [i.e., the Qur’ān], and indeed, We will be its guardian.” (Al-Hijr 15:9). As for this manuscript version or any other, we do not know who wrote it—whether they were a Muslim or a non-believer, or whether they recited it to a teacher or not. Therefore, such manuscripts hold no authenticity or value unless they align with the Book of Allah that is currently in our hands. However, by the grace of Allah, it was found to be identical to what we have; thus, there appears to be no issue with the manuscript.” (Source)

The Sheikh’s observation points to a crucial distinction in Islamic scholarship: the authority of the Quran rests not on physical manuscripts, but on the unbroken chain of living transmission. Manuscripts are welcomed as corroborating witnesses — but the Quran was never dependent on parchment for its survival.

Become Hafiz of the Quran — Earn Your Ijazah

the unbroken chain of transmission, the one that carried the Quran letter by letter from the Prophet’s lips is still alive today. And there is a place in it for all muslims. The Ijazah is a certified licence of recitation granted by a qualified sheikh, connecting you by name to a chain of teachers that reaches all the way back to the Prophet Muhammad — peace be upon him.

At Luqman Institute, our certified teachers — themselves holders of Ijazah — are ready to guide you from your first lesson to the moment you receive your own. Students in the UK and USA have already joined the chain. Now it is your turn.

Whatever errors or lapses occurred in this work are from me and from Satan, and Allah and His Messenger are free from them. I remind you yet I myself forget, and we ask Allah for guidance, pardon, and well-being.
